You want do try your next plastering job yourself?

Here's a few tips to help you along.

  • Plaster won’t stick to just any surface and you don’t want it to start falling away, so ensure your surface is ready to be plastered.

  • Make sure it is clean – remove bits of existing plaster, dust or wallpaper.

  • Check the suction of your wall.

  • High suction porous backgrounds can suck the moisture from the plaster meaning it dries too quick – so you may need to wet the wall before you start.

  • When wetting your walls use a fine mist spray gun to avoid having to keep reaching down to re-wet your brush.

  • Once the water starts running down the wall, you know you’ve controlled the suction.

  • Low suction backgrounds, such as painted surfaces will also need to be properly prepared.

  • While plasterboard or backing coat can be skimmed over without preparation – existing plaster or previously painted surfaces will need treating with a bonding agent, such as a mix of PVA glue and water to ensure the plaster sticks to the wall.

  • You could also try adding a handful of sand to the PVA mixture to give it a rougher texture and better adhesion.

  • Clean as you go along – it may sound over the top but it’s vital to have clean buckets, tools and equipment to ensure your plaster doesn’t go off and you get a better finish that lasts.

Popular Questions

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • Can a beginner plaster a wall?

Anyone can plaster a wall , but you need to know some basics. You can't just pick up a trowel and start throwing plaster on the walls. You need to correctly prepare your walls for plastering. Failing to do this can produce a very unhappy experience.

  • Can I learn to plaster myself?

Plastering is most definitely a skill, so you should understand that before you begin. Any skill can be learnt, but it's going to take you a bit of time and a bit of practise. With a bit of time, learning and careful work, you can definitely tackle your next DIY plastering job!

  • How do you fix bad plastering?

Repairing holes and crumbled plaster requires removing the damage and patching empty spaces. Scrape or brush off loose plaster to reveal the lath underneath. Drywall makes a suitable patch for the resulting bare spot, and drywall screws fasten it to the lath. Masking the repair is the same as with a drywall repair.

  • What's the difference between plastering and skimming?

Skimming is the name given to a plastering technique where a wall is plastered with a layer of thin coat. ... They are both used to decorate buildings and increase the durability of a wall, but skimming is done to upgrade an old building whereas plastering is done to a new one.

  • Is skimming cheaper than plastering?

    Cost of re-skimming a room.

If your walls are already in good condition, you may only need to re-skim your room. This typically involves adding a 5-8 mm layer of finishing plaster over the top of existing plaster walls. So, it's a lot cheaper than plastering a room from scratch.
